Civil War Tours

When you visit Birdsong Resort and Marina ask about our civil war tours. Historical Civil War Battle of Johnsonville happened on the area waters of our own Kentucky Lake. Nathan Bedford Forrest opened fire on the supply depot and the town of Johnsonville November 4, 1864. One of West Tennessee’s highest points is Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park’s Pilot Knob. The “Knob” is home to a monument on the battle site and a Tennessee River Folk Life Museum.

It’s more than meets the eye. That is, the Tennessee River Freshwater Pearl Museum located at Birdsong Marina on the scenic Tennessee River’s beautiful Kentucky Lake. I was looking forward to the museum and to learn about pearls. But I did not know of all the things to do at mile marker 103.7 LDB.

The Tennessee River Pearl Museum is tucked away inside the main building of the combination marina office, boat sales office, boating supply store, and pearl showroom. The large building houses all these, plus it has a small auditorium for showing an introductory video about the pearl farm. The owners, Bob Keast and his wife Janis, have operated the museum and marina since 1980. Bob Jr. originally moved to Birdsong when he was 10 back in 1961 with his Mother and Father, Lorrine and Bob Keast, Sr.

When settlers first crossed the Appalachian mountains from the Virginia/Carolina area, they found that the French trappers and Spanish explorers had long preceded them in using the Cumberland and Tennessee rivers as their highways”. Of course, the Native Americans preceded them. But, the shoals, bars, “sucks” and other hazards naturally occurring owing to the geological history of the region didn’t bother those who traveled pretty light. The settlers came in flat boats with animals, household goods and merchandise. Nashville, TN, was established by a party, which came down the Tennessee River to the Ohio and thence up the Cumberland for about 200 river miles. In 1799, this group lost several boats, people and possessions in the infamous “suck’ below Chattanooga. This hazard was only one of many which dogged the development of safe navigation on the Tennessee for well over one hundred years.

Birdsong Resort, Marina and Lakeside RV Campground is a 58-acre recreational complex that has been operated by Bob Keast and family in the true sense of southern hospitality as a second-generation owner since 1961.

The Tennessee River lakes are home to more than 100 main species of fish, about 20 of which are caught regularly. These lakes, especially Kentucky Lake, are justifiably famous for crappie, bluegill, catfish, stripers, sauger, and largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass.

Artificial fish attractors – everything from old tires to great brush piles to stake beds – have been constructed in nearly all major creeks holding at least 10 feet of water. The attractors create a habitat for small fish; the small fish in turn lure the larger ones. A study conducted in Kentucky Lake by fishery biologists revealed that one acre of brush in a fish attractor averaged nearly 3,000 bluegill, 1,500 crappie, 580 catfish, and two largemouth bass.

Birdsong Resort & Marina on beautiful Kentucky Lake is the home of The Tennessee River Freshwater Pearl Farm – the only freshwater pearl culturing farm in America.

Originally founded by John R. Latendresse (1925-2000) as one of eight pilot farm locations in 1979, all productivity measures eventually narrowed to the one location in Birdsong Creek. John and his wife Chessie, had attempted for many years to adapt the Japanese technique to our native waters, and species of mussels. 1984 was the first year a productive harvest was turned.

From February to June Birdsong Resort and Marina’s, a Tennessee resort nestled on the Tennessee River’s beautiful Kentucky Lake,  Crappie run starts.  There the crappie come into shallow water to spawn. Fishermen who visit our marina enjoy catching Crappie in 3 to 10 feet of water, close to brush piles, stumps, and tree tops, fishing with minnows.

Angling for Crappie is popular throughout much of North America. Methods vary, but among the most popular is called “Spider Rigging,” a method characterized by a fisherman in a boat with many long fishing rods pointing away from the angler at various angles like spokes from a wheel. Anglers who employ the Spider Rigging method may choose from among many popular baits. Some of the most popular are plastic jigs with lead jig heads, crankbaits or live minnows. Many anglers also chum or dump live bait into the water to attract the fish hoping the fish will bite their bait. Crappie are also regularly targeted and caught during the spawning period by fly fishermen, and can be taken from frozen ponds and lakes in winter by ice fishing.
